SAN FRANCISCO, CA—November 9, 2009—The Gladstone Institutes today announced that it has hired Bruce Spaulding, who recently retired as UCSF'S senior vice chancellor of advancement and planning as its new chief of strategic planning, effective December 14th. Spaulding's more than 20 years of experience in planning and development in the Bay Area will complement the extensive administrative and research experience of Gladstone's incoming president R. Sanders “Sandy” Williams, MD, who will join the institutes from Duke University in March 2010.

Spaulding will manage external affairs and academic affiliations, work with Gladstone's president and trustees on long-range strategic planning as well as oversee the organizations' institutional advancement efforts.

“Bruce has been a great friend of Gladstone and we're fortunate to have him on our team at a critical time in our growth,” said Gladstone's current president Robert W. Mahley, MD, PhD. “As the driving visionary and force behind Mission Bay, Bruce has demonstrated that he can bring together diverse organizations and interests to move things forward. His extensive experience in the Bay Area will be a great asset to the new president, Sandy Williams.”

A former chief administrative officer of Fresno County and county manager for Las Vegas's Clark County, Spaulding joined UCSF 22 years ago. His initial charge was to find a second campus to expand from space-constrained Parnassus Heights.

Spaulding worked with several developers and the city of San Francisco to acquire the land that would become Mission Bay. Over the years, he also took on philanthropic development activities for UCSF.

“I'm looking forward to helping Sandy Williams and the Gladstone leadership carry out its vision for progress, building on the momentum established over the last 30 years,” Spaulding said. “Gladstone has built a reputation for an entrepreneurial approach to partnerships and collaborations to support programs to accelerate discoveries in major disease areas. And, there are many new models to be explored.”

“Bruce Spaulding has left a great legacy to UCSF,” said former Chancellor Haile T. Debas, MD. “Gladstone is very fortunate to be able to take advantage of his great knowledge and skills at this stage of their progress.”
