Trainee-to-Tenure
Tuesday, May 15, 2018

Bob Mahley, MD, PhD

If you are aiming for a tenure-track academic position, you will want to do everything you can to ensure that your interview is successful. A chalk talk is an opportunity for a search committee to see how you think on the fly with a whiteboard marker in hand or, increasingly, a shared screen. Unlike a typical job talk or seminar, in which you present research findings, in a chalk talk you should provide a window into your plan for your research career.

The ultimate goal of a chalk talk is to give a high-level view of what you’ll start working on immediately when hired, and how you’ll develop that work into an independent laboratory. A useful chalk talk will show that you communicate well, and can integrate new ideas or tactfully rebut questions.

Bob Mahley will discuss the various roles of a chalk talk search committee, as well as the key information to include, how to properly structure the talk, and critical items that should be on the whiteboard.

This event is open to everyone at Gladstone. However, the content is geared toward graduate students and postdocs.
