The Unusual Genetic Inheritance That Could Change Alzheimer’s Treatment
The Unusual Genetic Inheritance That Could Change Alzheimer’s Treatment
Nature—In the 1980s, scientists began studying a family that suffered a genetic form of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Three decades later, they identified one member of that family who showed remarkable protection against the cognitive decline of Alzheimer’s due to a rare mutation in the ApoE gene. Now, Gladstone Senior Investigator Yadong Huang and others are working to develop therapies that mimic that protective mutation, hoping to treat or even prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
