Anna Torrent, PhD

Research Technologist, Gladstone Institutes

Have you ever seen one of Gladstone’s cellfies and wondered where that image came from and how it was captured? Imaging cells and tissues for scientific analysis entails careful prep work and sophisticated microscopes. The Histology and Light Microscopy Core provides these resources and gives researchers unprecedented insight into a variety of biological samples, from individual cells to tissue slices to whole organs. Get an insider’s look at the core from two research technologists as they walk you through their work and show you the impressive images that come from their lab.

This virtual tour will include:

  • An introduction to the core’s work by core director Blaise Ndjamen
  • An overview of histology, the sample preparation and staining techniques that bring out the biological features researchers are interested in
  • An overview of the core’s microscopes, including a light-sheet microscope that can penetrate through thick tissues and confocal microscopes that can resolve minute structures within individual cells
  • Q&A with the scientists

Women’s History Month events have been organized by the Women’s Initiative at Gladstone. The Women’s Initiative aims to create an inclusive culture in which women are empowered to contribute, learn, and lead by identifying and addressing issues that affect women at Gladstone and foster a supportive network that connects them as they progress through their professional careers.
