The primary reason we haven't been able to fully eliminate HIV is that the virus goes "dark" inside certain cells, creating a persistent reservoir that the immune system simply can't find. To solve this, scientists need a way to identify these rare, infected cells at the single-cell level. Graduate student Sophia Miliotis of the Roan Lab will talk about how she's using TRACeR—a cutting-edge detection tool—to pinpoint the specific mechanisms these cells use to escape the body's natural defenses. Identifying these individual escape artists is the first step toward developing targeted interventions that could one day clear the virus for good.
