Convergence Seminar
Srivatsan (Vatsan) Raman, PhD
Vatsan Raman is the S.C. Fang Endowed Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is also the Director of the NIH T32 Biotechnology Training Program. The Raman Lab develops high-throughput, generalizable technologies to reveal how biological sequence encodes function from molecules to cells and systems. Central to the lab’s approach are pooled functional-genomics assays that measure the effects of vast variant libraries in parallel, enabling complete functional landscapes, the discovery of sequence–function rules, and machine- learning models that both predict and propose designs. Working at the interface of fundamental discovery and applied engineering, the group uses these rules to build programmable proteins, transporters, and viral systems with applications in sensing and diagnostics, biomanufacturing, host– pathogen biology, and therapeutic modalities. Raman trained with David Baker (PhD mentor) and George Church (Postdoc mentor).

The Convergence Seminar is organized by Gladstone’s Institute for Data Science and Biotechnology. This seminar series brings together scientists from varying disciplines to solve complex scientific questions and accelerate the path to cures.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
At Gladstone, we are committed to providing events and professional development activities that resonate with our community’s diverse members. Our goal is to develop creative programming that encompasses a wide variety of ideas and perspectives to inspire, educate, and engage with everyone within our walls.
We want to effect positive change through our events and activities by providing a platform for discussions on important topics related to increasing diversity and inclusiveness in the sciences.
