John Aitchison, PhD

Professor, University of Washington Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine Seattle Children’s Research Institute

Professor Aitchison was trained in cell biology at McMaster University, Canada, and at Rockefeller University, New York. His laboratory, at Seattle Children’s Research Institute and University of Washington, is focused on developing and applying systems approaches to reveal fundamental-level insights into cell biology, host-pathogen interactions, and infectious disease. He initially began his research using yeast as a model system studying nuclear transport and peroxisome biogenesis and now also applies the principles and technologies of systems biology to the study of host-pathogen interactions in the context of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and dengue, bacteria such as M. tuberculosis and protozoans causing malaria.

The Center for Cell Circuitry Seminar connects investigators across disciplines to develop single-cell tools to map how cellular components connect into circuits. The center aims to develop new single-cell approaches that overcome limitations inherent in traditional techniques that analyze bulk populations of cells, thereby obscuring individual cell behavior.
