Complete the application to apply for the 2026 PUMAS internship program.

Application Materials (Single File Upload Required)

All applicants must upload one (1) combined file containing all required application materials listed below. Merge your documents into a single file before uploading (PDF preferred) and name the file lastname_firstname_PUMAS2026.

Required Contents

1. Transcripts

All PUMAS applicants must provide an official or unofficial copy of their college transcript(s). Upload all documents below. Do not mail your transcripts to Gladstone.

If you have attended more than one college, include a transcript from each college. You must also upload an unofficial record of the courses you are currently enrolled in this semester.

2. Résumé

Your résumé should be no longer than two (2) pages, and should include relevant information from college (not high school). Your résumé should include:

  • Name
  • Contact information (address, phone number, email)
  • College and anticipated year of graduation
  • Any awards and honors received
  • Any volunteer or work experience (e.g., church activities, community service, clubs/organizations,etc.)
  • Any leadership roles
  • Relevant skills and strengths

3. Essay Questions

Essay Questions: New or Returning Applicants

Answer the following essay questions using a maximum of two pages for all three answers.

  1. Why are you interested in studying biological/biomedical science?
  2. What are your career goals? And how would participating in the PUMAS program enhance your goals of becoming a scientist?
  3. The success of the PUMAS program depends on the active cooperation of all participants. What strengths and skills do you bring to the program that you can share with other students?

Special Essay Questions: Returning PUMAS Interns

If you have previously participated in the PUMAS internship program and wish to return, answer the two following questions, instead of the three questions listed above.

Maximum: one (1) page for both questions.

  1. Why do you want to continue working at Gladstone?
  2. What can you get out of this summer experience that you didn’t get out of your first PUMAS internship experience?

4. Letters of Recommendation

You must submit one or two letters of recommendation at the time you submit your application. Your letters of recommendation must come from a scientific mentor and/or educator, such as a college science professor from whom you’ve taken a science course. Your recommender may also email their letters of recommendation to academicaffairs@gladstone.ucsf.edu before the application deadline of March 9, 2026. If they’ll be emailing us directly, be sure to include their names and emails in your application package.

Student Commitment

Do you have any prior commitments or circumstances that overlap with the PUMAS internship program dates (June 8 to August 7, 2026) or limit your participation in a 20 to 25-hour work week?
Please list below any summer commitments, including work (full-time or part-time), travel plans, summer classes, or other internship programs. Please indicate the dates affected by each commitment.

Proof of Citizenship/Resident Status

If you are accepted into the PUMAS program and offered summer employment at Gladstone Institutes, will you be able to provide documentation, on the first day of work, that you are authorized to work in the United States (either as a citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, or alien) for this internship position?

I understand that the PUMAS internship program at the Gladstone Institutes is a paid 9 week laboratory internship from June 8 to August 7, 2026. If accepted, I agree to participate fully and understand that I must be available to work 20–25 hours per week for the entire duration. I also understand that I must provide my own housing accommodation and my own transportation to and from Gladstone. I also certify that I am 18 years of age or older.
