Hoai Nguyen, PhD

Faculty Member/Leader, Medical Microbiology Research Group at the School of Biotechnology
Vice Director, Research Center for Infectious Diseases at International University, Vietnam National University

The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) at UC San Francisco (UCSF) presents a seminar with Hoai Nguyen, faculty member and leader of the Medical Microbiology Research Group at the School of Biotechnology, and Vice Director of the Research Center for Infectious Diseases at International University, Vietnam National University (VNU-HCMC).

Nguyen’s research focuses on proteomic analysis of bacterial pathogens, with the goal of developing rapid and accurate diagnostic tools for detecting pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance genes. She is also exploring alternative therapies to complement or replace conventional antibiotics. In her role at the Research Center for Infectious Diseases, Nguyen is a strong advocate for the One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in understanding and controlling infectious disease outbreaks.

In her talk, Nguyen will provide an overview of Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCMC), a leading academic and research institution in Vietnam. She will introduce the university’s structure, with a focus on the International University, where she is based. The presentation will highlight the Research Center for Infectious Diseases and the Medical Microbiology Research Group, which is dedicated to pressing public health issues such as antimicrobial resistance and diagnostic innovation. Nguyen will also share insights from her current academic visit to UCSF, and explore opportunities for future collaboration between UCSF and Vietnamese institutions. Potential areas for partnership include joint research projects, co-authored publications, academic exchanges, and collaborative grant development to advance global health efforts.
