John Marioni, PhD
John Marioni is the Global Head of the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CSCoE) at Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED). In this role, John oversees computational scientists from both Genentech and Roche, ensuring all future AI projects serve the breadth of Genentech’s research and early development activities. John is also a member of the gRED leadership team, reflecting the importance of computation, software and quantitative approaches for research, drug discovery and development across gRED.
Prior to joining Genentech, John was the Head of Research at the European Bioinformatics Institute, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL-EBI) in Cambridge, UK. As Head of Research at EMBL-EBI, John was responsible for 16 research groups in diverse areas of computational biology. John’s work has been recognized internationally: for example, he is a member of the Organizing Committee of the Human Cell Atlas, in 2021, he was elected to membership of EMBO, and in 2022 he was elected a Fellow of the UK’s Academy of Medical Sciences. John’s lab has made particularly significant contributions in the area of functional genomics, including developing some of the most widely used approaches for the analysis of single-cell genomics data. In addition, with outstanding experimental collaborators, John’s group has made important contributions to our understanding of cell fate decisions in the contexts of early development, in the immune system and in disease, including cancer.
A statistician by training, John obtained his PhD in Computational Biology at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Simon Tavaré and performed postdoctoral research in the group of Matthew Stephens in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Chicago.
