Gladstone Institutes is an independent, nonprofit research organization driving a new era in biomedical innovation—an era in which it's possible to contemplate cures, not just treatments.

We're structured in every way to make this vision a reality, from our location and leadership to the culture that shapes how we work and who we hire. Here's a look at what sets Gladstone apart.

Our research is explicitly focused on solving disease.

Gladstone is 100% dedicated to disease-focused research, with more than 600 biologists, chemists, engineers, and data scientists who bring a deeply mechanistic understanding of how the human body works and what goes wrong in disease. But we don't attempt to address every disease. We've chosen to focus on cardiology, neurology, immunology, and virology—and we've built teams of the world's top researchers and physician-scientists to work collaboratively in these areas to tackle the biggest problems, with an eye for clinical success.

We seamlessly integrate game-changing technologies across all institutes.

Our expertise in data science and AI is integrated into all disease areas at Gladstone—accelerating discoveries and allowing teams to quickly interpret massive data sets. Similarly, our globally recognized leadership in stem cell biology and CRISPR gene editing, as well as proteomics and other technologies, are woven into all of our labs and embedded in most experiments in some way.

Minimal bureaucracy means frictionless discovery.

A streamlined leadership structure and lack of traditional academic departments ensures we can follow the science where it leads without red tape or unnecessary layers of approval. Decisions are based on whether they help us meet the goals of our mission: to pursue research that overcomes disease, and to educate the next generation of scientific leaders. If the answer is yes, we find a way to do it.

Our San Francisco location fosters enriching collaborations and partnerships.

While Gladstone fully embraces the benefits of our independent research model, we don't work in isolation. We're situated in the middle of three world-class Bay Area institutions with which we have strong research affiliations: UC San Francisco (a partner since our founding in 1979), UC Berkeley, and Stanford University. We're also connected to the region's thriving biotech and venture capital ecosystem, which helps translate our discoveries into medicines.

Culture is our superpower.

We hire the brightest minds, biggest risk-takers, and most visionary leaders from all over the world. But most importantly, we hire good people. Our scientists collaborate easily because they're giving of their time and energy. They care about each other. This creates an environment in which people are having fun and working hard because they love what they do, driven by the potential for their discoveries to save human lives.
