Robert Wicks, Vice President, Philanthropy, Gladstone

Have you ever wondered how fundraising works or what entices philanthropists to give? Perhaps you want to learn more about fundraising as a career.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • What motivates philanthropists to give
  • How to identify potential donors to support your research
  • How to build meaningful relationships with donors and ask for support
  • The various roles available in fundraising
  • The role philanthropy plays in Gladstone's annual revenue and long–term goals

Robert Wicks joined Gladstone as vice president of philanthropy in 2018. Prior to joining Gladstone, Wicks led Dartmouth’s West Coast Advancement Office, where he assembled a team that produced several record-breaking fundraising years. He also launched the Dartmouth Founders Project, an innovative pre-IPO philanthropy program that has served as a model for similar initiatives throughout the country.

Wicks began his fundraising career at Stanford University and held multiple frontline roles in southern California and Silicon Valley during a period of back-to-back capital campaigns. He has worked closely with the venture capital, private equity, and entrepreneurial communities to develop new approaches to philanthropy and volunteer engagement.

The Exploring Careers in Industry and Technology (ExCITe) series was created in 2018 to introduce trainees to career options away from the bench in various industry fields, and is presented by guest speakers working in those fields. The purpose is to provide trainees with the tools needed to make informed decisions about their career path when their training at Gladstone ends.
