Inequity in biomedical research compromises scholarship and culture. Only 5.2 percent of Latinx people and 2.4 percent of Black and African Americans are awarded doctorates in science, technology, engineering, and math. Underrepresented communities also face a sharp decline at the postdoctoral and junior faculty levels.

Mentorship and cultural change are proven ways to support and retain underrepresented scientists and teams.

In Brave Bystanding, you’ll cultivate straightforward skills to build inclusion. Using a research-backed bystander intervention framework, you’ll learn to recognize and address interpersonal harm in the workplace. The resulting shift encourages all team members to build enduring equity.

Registration is limited to 35 participants per session, and each person can only attend one session. Choose between this workshop and one offered on February 3, 2022.

About the Speaker

Kim Tran is an equity strategist who brings movement lessons to organizational spaces. For over a decade, she has supported social impact organizations align their external work and internal values. Her clients include the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at UC Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, and PREreview. Kim holds a doctorate in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley and is currently writing a book on Asian American activist solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Her work has been featured in NPR, Slate, Politico, PBS New Hour and The New York Times.
