Katerina Akassoglou, PhD, Senior Investigator

Katerina Akassoglou and her team aim to understand the mechanisms that control communication between the brain, immune, and vascular systems. They pioneered studies showing that when the blood-brain barrier is disrupted, the blood-clotting factor fibrinogen can leak into the brain, where it inhibits myelin repair, activates immune responses, and induces neurodegeneration. They developed high-resolution in vivo imaging methods to image the neurovascular interface and a new therapeutic antibody to target the neuroinflammatory functions of fibrin. These mechanisms and therapeutic applications could contribute to a wide range of neurological conditions associated with blood-brain barrier disruption, demyelination, and microglial activation, such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and brain injury.
