Dr. Bersot’s work focuses on genetic disorders of cholesterol metabolism. At the Gladstone Lipid Clinic, which began as a resource for GICD, he provides patient care and teaches healthcare providers and community members about research related to blood lipid (cholesterol) disorders and preventing coronary heart disease (CHD). Dr. Bersot also established the Gladstone Lipid Clinic Outreach Program and the Lipid Disorders Training Center. These programs also teach healthcare providers about the latest advances in heart disease prevention.
Dr. Bersot has received many awards and honors, including the Nutritional Lipid Association Service Award for Past Presidents, the American Heart Association Special Recognition Award for Teaching, Service, and Leadership by the Council of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, and the Clinical Mentoring Recommendation by the UCSF School of Pharmacy. As a member of the American Heart Association, Dr. Bersot serves on the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology and on the Clinical Affairs Committee. He also chairs one of four ethics panels that review all clinical research protocols at UCSF.
Prior to joining Gladstone at its inception in 1979, Dr. Bersot served as Chief Resident of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Bersot earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky and an MD and PhD from Vanderbilt University. He completed his medical residency at UCSF.
I became interested in the biology of plasma lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis when I started his career in research and medicine as a medical student. It was then that I met and began to work with Gladstone Founding President Robert W. Mahley, MD, PhD. Since then, we have worked together, including the pivotal start of the first Gladstone Institute, the Gladstone Institute for Cardiovascular Disease. I continue to work at Gladstone because it offers research and teaching opportunities that are simply outstanding. I believe that Gladstone is truly an exciting and rewarding place to work.
