Gladstone Science Talks
Wednesday, June 23, 2021

Ken Nakamura, MD, PhD

Associate Investigator, Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease

Energy failure is an underlying mechanism in multiple neurodegenerative diseases. In this seminar, Ken Nakamura will describe his team’s innovative approaches to investigate neuronal mitochondrial function, and how his work may lead to novel therapeutics designed to maintain or restore cellular energy levels.

The Nakamura Lab investigates mitochondrial biology and metabolism in the brain, and is particularly interested in understanding how disrupting mitochondria and energy metabolism in neurons contributes to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, his team defined the “ATPome”—the subset of genes that determine cellular energy levels, which could lead to new therapeutic approaches for diseases of energy failure.
